Elijah the Prophet
Elijah is quite famous for
many things. I will touch on 3 parts of his life that are very
interesting. I personally like him as my most favorite prophet because he
gets to cook people with fire.
Part 1
1 Kings 18:20-40
Elijah’s Mount Carmel Victory
20 So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and
gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21
And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between
two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.”
But the people answered him not a word. 22 Then
Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but
Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23
Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for
themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under
it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but
put no fire under it. 24 Then you call on
the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who
answers by fire, He is God.”
So all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken.”
25 Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal,
“Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are
many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”
26 So they took the bull which was given them, and
they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till
noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice; no one
answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.
27 And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them
and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he
is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be
awakened.” 28 So they cried aloud, and cut
themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed
out on them. 29 And when midday was past, they
prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening
sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid
attention.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near
to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the
LORD that was broken down. 31 And Elijah
took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob,
to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”[a]
32 Then with the stones he built an altar in the
name of the LORD; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two
seahs of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, cut
the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, “Fill four
waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the
wood.” 34 Then he said, “Do it a second
time,” and they did it a second time; and he said, “Do it a
third time,” and they did it a third time. 35
So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
36 And it came to pass, at the time of the
offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and
said, “LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that
You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I
have done all these things at Your word. 37 Hear
me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God,
and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the
burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the
water that was in the trench. 39 Now when
all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The
LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets
of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah
brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there.

This is AWESOME!
Parts 2 and 3 are equally as impressive. Elisha is also famous for some
miracles he performed but we will cover him later on. You might want to
read about them calling Elisha a bald headed man. He sends two she bears
to attack the youths...HE HE.
Part 2
2 Kings 1-15
God Judges Ahaziah
1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the
death of Ahab.
2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper
room in Samaria, and was injured; so he sent messengers and said to them, “Go,
inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this
injury.” 3 But the angel[a]
of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers
of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is
no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of
Ekron?’ 4 Now therefore, thus says the LORD:
‘You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall
surely die.’” So Elijah departed.
5 And when the messengers returned to him, he said
to them, “Why have you come back?”
6 So they said to him, “A man came up to meet us,
and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and say to him, “Thus
says the LORD: ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that
you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall
not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely
die.’”’”
7 Then he said to them, “What kind of man was
it who came up to meet you and told you these words?”
8 So they answered him, “A hairy man wearing a
leather belt around his waist.”
And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
9 Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with
his fifty men. So he went up to him; and there he was, sitting on the top of a
hill. And he spoke to him: “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’”
10 So Elijah answered and said to the captain of
fifty, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down from heaven and consumed
him and his fifty. 11 Then he sent to him another
captain of fifty with his fifty men.
And he answered and said to him: “Man of God, thus has the king said, ‘Come
down quickly!’”
12 So Elijah answered and said to them, “If I am
a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty
men.” And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his
fifty.
13 Again, he sent a third captain of fifty with his
fifty men. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his
knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him, and said to him: “Man of God,
please let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in
your sight. 14 Look, fire has come down from heaven
and burned up the first two captains of fifties with their fifties. But let my
life now be precious in your sight.”
15 And the angel[b]
of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So
he arose and went down with him to the king.
This is my favorite part of
Elijah's life. He is the only one besides Satan to call down fire on
people. It's funny that Satan had the power in the Bible in the Old
Testament to call down fire and kill Job's Family but now he does not do it in
our New Testament times. God must have removed some of his power.
Now to cover the ending of Elijah's life. This is the way to leave the
Earth. Enoch was the only other one to get out of the world without dying.
Enoch walked with God
and was not for God took Him. Genesis 5:24-25
Part 3
2 Kings 2:1-11
Elijah Ascends to Heaven
1 And it came to pass, when
the LORD was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah
went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 Then Elijah said to
Elisha, “Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”
But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I
will not leave you!” So they went down to Bethel.
3 Now the sons of the prophets who were at
Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that the LORD will
take away your master from over you today?”
And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent!”
4 Then Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here,
please, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho.”
But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will
not leave you!” So they came to Jericho.
5 Now the sons of the prophets who were at
Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that the LORD will take
away your master from over you today?”
So he answered, “Yes, I know; keep silent!”
6 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, please,
for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.”
But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will
not leave you!” So the two of them went on. 7 And
fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a
distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. 8
Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it
was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry
ground.
9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that
Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away
from you?”
Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”
10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless,
if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if
not, it shall not be so.” 11 Then it
happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared
with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah
went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Now this is the way to get
out of life. He is the only one in the Bible to leave the world in a
Whirlwind. Many people think he went up in the chariot of fire. This
picture above looks nice but is a misrepresentation of the story of
Elijah. Read it again if you missed that. I put it in blue. I
will also add another part to this about Elijah when he had a meeting with God
Himself.
1 Kings 19:11-18
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the
mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and
strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the
LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an
earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12
and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire;
and after the fire a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he
wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the
cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
14 And he said, “I have been very zealous for the
LORD God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left;
and they seek to take my life.”
15 Then the LORD said to him: “Go, return on your
way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as
king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the
son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel
Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17
It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and
whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18
Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to
Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
I thought it was neat when
the Lord passed by. God is pretty awesome. You should read about the
Children of Israel and the cloud of glory over the Tabernacle. It was a
cloud by day and a fire by night. God was in the cloud. There are a
lot of neat stories in the Bible. I hope you enjoyed the story of
Elijah. He did more things but that is the main 3 things he did. If
you want to read the complete story of Elijah you need to read 1 Kings and the 1
& 2 chapters of 2 Kings. Thanks for stopping in.
